Fort De Soto isn't just a beach. It's a 1,136-acre nature preserve made up of five interconnected keys — Mullet Key, St. Christopher Key, St. Jean Key, Madelaine Key, and Bonne Fortune Key — at the mouth of Tampa Bay on the Gulf of Mexico.
Because it's a protected park, there are no hotels, condos, or high-rises in sight. The water is shallow and lagoon-like, natural sandbars create calm tidal pools, and the mangroves and palms are part of a preserved coastal ecosystem where loggerhead sea turtles still nest.

North Beach
The crown jewel
The most famous stretch at Fort De Soto and the reason for the awards. Shallow lagoon-style water from natural sandbars, a long, wide shoreline, a pirate playground in the sand, restrooms, showers, and a snack bar. Perfect for families with small kids.
East Beach
Panoramic views
Smaller but with a one-of-a-kind view of the iconic Sunshine Skyway Bridge. Picnic shelters with tables make it ideal for groups, and the atmosphere is calmer than North Beach. Great for picnics and couples looking for quiet.
Dog Beach
For your four-legged friend
Voted one of the best dog beaches in the USA (Top 10, USA Today 2024). Leash-free, with dog wash stations and a friendly local dog-owner community. A must if you live in Orlando with a pet.
History
The historic 1898 fort.
Built in 1898 during the Spanish-American War to defend Tampa Bay from an invasion that never came, the fort is now one of the park's most photogenic stops. You'll find preserved mortar batteries with giant cannons, the original soldiers' quarters, and a free history museum inside.
Admission is free and a visit takes about 1-2 hours. The cannons make for a guaranteed family photo, and the panoramic views over the coast are worth the walk. It's a favorite with kids and history buffs alike.

Beach & Swimming
North Beach's shallow, lagoon-like water is the main draw — safe for kids, with natural tide pools full of tiny fish and shells.
Pier Fishing
Two large piers (Gulf Pier and Bay Pier). Thanks to the Friends of Fort De Soto, fishing from the piers is FREE — no license required.
Biking
A 7-mile paved, car-free trail connects North Beach, East Beach, the boat ramp, and the campground. Rentals run $25-$40/day.
Egmont Key Ferry
Hubbard's Ferry runs from the Fort De Soto boat ramp to uninhabited Egmont Key — pristine beaches, a historic lighthouse, and great snorkeling. ~$25-$35 per person.
Camping

Plan Your Day
Getting there & smart tips
Address: 3500 Pinellas Bayway S, Tierra Verde, FL 33715. From Orlando, take I-4 West toward Tampa, merge onto I-275 South, exit at Pinellas Bayway (Exit 17), pay the ~$1.25 toll, and follow the signs into the park. Round-trip tolls run about $5-$7.
Arrive before 10 AM
Parking near North Beach fills up on weekends and holidays. Early arrival means a guaranteed spot, shade, and a calmer beach.
The park is cashless
Since 2025, Fort De Soto is fully cashless. Bring a credit card or use the Flowbird parking app — cash is not accepted.
SunPass covers the toll
The Pinellas Bayway toll works with SunPass (~$1.25). Without it, the rental company bills you the toll later, often with a fee.
Pack a cooler
Park concessions are basic. Coolers with food and drinks are allowed and save you a lot of money.
Watch the beach flags
Green is normal, yellow means caution, red means stay out of the water, and purple means jellyfish are present.
Sunset is spectacular
With no buildings to block the view, the sunset here is unbeatable. Arrive about 30 minutes early to find your spot.
